The latest addition to my website is Anna Lidia Vega Serova‘s Ánima fatua (Anima fatua). This is an autobiographical novel about a woman born in Leningrad to a Cuban father and Russian mother. They emigrate to Cuba but the parents divorce and mother, daughter and son return to Russia where things do not go well. The grandparents resent their foreign grandchildren, the mother is stressed out and Alia, our heroine struggles to fit in. We follow her story as she makes a series of poor decisions, alienating friends, bad choices of men, drugs, drink and partying, dropping out of or being kicked out of school/university and ending up couch surfing, unsure of what she wants and where she is going. We know the author returned to Cuba and presumably Alia does the same.
