Tsering Döndrup: Rlun dmar ’ur ’ur(The Red Wind Howls )

The latest addition to my website is Tsering Döndrup‘ s Rlun dmar ’ur ’ur(The Red Wind Howls ). The novel, which was banned in Tibet and cost the author his job tells of the Chinese takeover of Tibet. Though critical of the Chinese, many of the Tibetans are far from saints. Alak Drong was a poor shepherd who became a lama when he was identified as a reincarnated lama by a revered dying lama. He enjoys rhe trappings of wealth and when he is arrested as a class enemy and sent to prison he betrays others to get his sentence reduced. The prison life is hard with ten hour work day, poor quality food and brutal treatment. Many die and when they do get out they face famine and cruelty from both Chinese and fellow Tibetans. Things ease up a bit but Döndrup shows life is never easy. The book ends with the death of Mao. It is an excellent and honest account of the hardships the Tibetans suffered and presumably still suffer at the hands of the Chinese.
