The latest addition to my website is Wu Jianren‘s 新石頭記 The New Story of the Stone). The novel is a continuation of the famous eighteenth century Chinese novel The Story of the Stone, aka The Dream of the Red Chamber . You do not have to read the original to appreciate this work. Jia Baoyu, the hero of the original had set out to to take his imperial exams but had dropped out, become a monk and now decides to rejoin the world but emerges in the modern world i.e. early twentieth century. Accompanied by his valet, the first person he meets he finds the Chinese economy is being run by foreigners and the anti-foreigner Boxer Rebellion breaks out. He has more adventures before emerging in the very futuristic the the Realm of Civilization with flying cars, immortality, brain expansion, weather control and much more, some of which we now have but much that we do not. It is an enlightened authoritarian state with no crime, religion or beggars. He even manages a trip to the South Pole in a submarine, It is a fascinating and highly imaginative tale and a most enjoyable read.
