Krisztina Tóth : A majom szeme ( Reading The Eye of the Monkey)

The latest addition to my website is Krisztina Tóth‘s A majom szeme ( Reading The Eye of the Monkey), . Tóth has had to leave Hungary for political reasons. This is a dystopian novel about a country called the uUified Regency which is clearly based on Hungary. Giselle, a university lecturerer in history in a country which is coming out of a civil war, is accosted by a young man who claims that she is his mother.Though married, she has never had a child. She goes to see a psychiatrist, Dr Kreutzer, who is separated from his wife and clearly has important contacts, including the Regent himself. Giselle, who is in a loveless and sexless marriage starts an affair wirh Kreutzer who has had a thousand affairs which often ended badly for the woman. Meanwhile, it is clear that the government, withDr Kreutzer, very much involved, is engaged in various dirty deeds against the ordinary people.Tóth tells an excellent story of a divided country run by a ruthless oligarchy and those caught up in it as well as those aiding it it.
