Chrysoula Georgoula: Λέγε με Στράτο (Call Me Stratos)

The latest addition to my website is Chrysoula Georgoula‘s Λέγε με Στράτο (Call Me Stratos). The eponymous Stratos is a man of many faults but he does work hard. He had been working successfully as a roofer when working in the construction industry dried up he opened a car wash. His faults include drinking too much, losing his temper too easily and all too often misbehaving in various ways. He is married to.Sotiria and at times is a devoted husband and at times he is not. The same applies to his parenting of his young daughter and son. However, we are moving into the Greek economic crisis and things become more difficult. Construction work dries up and people cut back on luxuries such as having their car washed. His wife works as a nurse and supports him. Eventually his bad behaviour is too much even for her and they separate . She keeps the flat while he goes back to live with his mother. He takes on various jobs but because of his inability to control his anger and his bad behaviour, he loses them all. He then turns to right wing, anti-immigrant politics. Stratos is his own worst enemy and while we feel a certain amount of sympathy for him on the whole not even the Greek economic crisis can excuse his bad behaviour. This book is interesting because of its subject matter but also because it is a relatively rare recent Greek novel in translation.
