The latest addition to my website is Germano Almeida‘s O Testamento do Sr. Napumoceno da Silva Araújo(The Last Will and Testament of Senhor da Silva Araújo), a novel from Cape Verde. Napumoceno hasbuilt up a successful export-import business and when he dies, he is expected to leave everything to his nephew and business partner, Carlos. Instead of conventional will he has written his memoirs but, to everyone’s surprise , they discover he had raped his former cleaning lady who gave birth to a daughter, his heiress. He has left copious notes and Maria da Graça, who now discovers sheidentity of her father, explores them as she tries to find out about him, including about Adelia, apparently the love of his life, why he disinherited Carlos and other details of his life, both good and bad – there are – plenty of both and other aspects of his life and finds a man of some complexity.
