The latest addition to my website is Akram Aylisli‘s Farewell, Aylis. Akram Aylisli is an Azerbaijani writer who has been viciously criticised for showing sympathy to the Armenians, particularly for the second book in this trilogy of novellas, Stone Dreams which tells the story of a famous Azerbaijani actor who is badly beaten for trying to rescue an Armenian man attacked by a mob. He is from Aylis, based on Nakhchivan, where Aylisli is from and, while unconscious, dreams of his idyllic homeland, as well as the attacks on the Armenians, which he bitterly opposes. The first story is about a teacher who is wrongly accused of trying to defect to the US while in UYemen and ends with him having a conversation about the Moon with Neil Armstrong. The third book is a satire on the ruthless and corrupt President and a man caught up in his political games, clearly based on Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev. It ends with Aylisli recounting his story and the opposition to him. It is an excellent glimpse into a part of the world relatively unkown in the West.
